Richard Axelbaum

Professor of Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering, Director of the Consortium for Clean Coal Utilization, Washington University in St. Louis

As Director of Washington University’s Consortium for Clean Coal Utilization and Head of the Laboratory for Advanced Combustion and Energy Research, Dr. Axelbaum leads the way for the advancement of technologies that foster clean utilization of coal through collaborations around the world.  His technical expertise, which includes clean coal, nanoparticles, nanotechnology, materials, synthesis and flames, provides significant insight when evaluating early technologies. Axelbaum also has entrepreneurial experience having successfully nurtured his company, AP Materials, Inc. from start-up to acquisition by Cabot Corporation in 2007.

Professor Axelbaum has over 50 peer-reviewed publications and holds four patents. He earned a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Washington University in 1977, a master’s and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, in 1983 and 1988, respectively.
